30 Day Music Challenge: Day 6 – A Song That Reminds Me of Somewhere

De La Soul – A Rollerskating Jam Named “Saturdays”

“All we need is feet….and rollerskates!”

Totally classic track. This song reminds me of the street I grew up on. In lower-class suburban Adelaide, I spent my days writing stories about horses, reading books about horses, wishing I was Wonder Woman and waiting to grow up so that I could marry Masaaki Sakai.

I also spent vast amounts of time in a beat-up, second-hand pair of rollerskates. So beat up, I’ll point out, that on the occasions I got to go to the local skating rink, where  all the cool kids were, strobe and disco lights flashing over the floor while the DJ playing all the latest hits yelled out instructions (like “skate the other way!”, “skate backwards!”, “speed-skaters only!”, “partners only!”) to mix things up a little, it was less embarassing to hire them there than wear my own.

My skates looked a lot like these, only more falling apart

Most of the time, though, I just rolled around the neighbourhood, thinking I was awesome because I could kinda skate sideways, or in a figure 8. Makes me wish I still had the t-shirt pictured below.

I loved that t-shirt. That’s also the only chest shot of myself you’ll ever get, which is a moot point because I don’t actually have one in that picture.

(Doing the audio player thing again because there’s no good quality vids on YouTube).
